Solo Jazz/Jazz Steps is an individual dance. It predates Lindy Hop and has come from a variety of different cultural traditions, but mainly from the Afro-American culture of North America. It shares the same name as the bustling city of South Carolina. Its dynamic style and spectacular sense of fun is closely identified with the wild spirit of the 1920's. It had a huge impact on the dance culture of the time, both for the complex coordination it requires and for the difficult steps-- rotation of the feet and waist and the flexing and extending of the arms and knees.
